Recently, Australian researchers University of New South Wales (UNSW) has been using data collected from smartphones to find new ways to diagnose and treat diseases. Dr. Timothy Churches from the UNSW has come to find that smartphones have incredibly sensitive sensors now that pick up the slightest movement within the body.

With information provided from smartphones researchers can use machine learning methods to detect problems within a patient’s body before serious problems occurred. Smartphone data can also be analyzed for change in a user’s behavior which could be caused from various diseases and or illnesses. Programs could be developed to monitor a change in a person’s body in order to prevent an outbreak of disease. Real-time analysis could also alert health care officials to contain if not implement real-time strategies based on the data.

Apps & AI Technology Helping to Further Development

Apps are being developed in order to help machine learning to analyze real-time data in order for machine learning to be the most effective for future development. Apps like “We Feel” provide real-time data to mental health professionals see how a person is feeling.

Tracking a person’s emotions provides real experience to share and analyze data effectively picking up patterns for machine learning to be optimized for the best outcome. “We Feel” is just an example of one app that’s been developed, with many more based on more research from being physically active to analyzing effects of food in the body.

AI technology also plays a role to further development as it will allow to customize profiles for each user within the system as no two people are the same. AI will be able to analyze voice patterns and take preventative actions to help a person overcome depression to help prevent the common cold. AI will even be able to analyze the body to prevent serious medical conditions from stroke to analyzing bone and joint structure to know when to have a hip replacement.

The future is bright when it comes to big data and the potential to when healthcare becomes its own smart application. Currently, we are using smartphones and devices with accordance of AI and other machine learning to detect small health issues. Time will come though when AI can be integrated with new devices that monitor our behavior and health, so our health is optimized, and we never face any real medical issues going forward.
